iPhone SDK Programming, A Beginner's Guide

Great Price "iPhone SDK Programming, A Beginner's Guide" for $19.04 Today

I would like to say that this book is great. It's definitely a great book for beginners.
The book teaches how to do the basic stuff such as navigation controllers, table views and simple stuff such as buttons, images, view controllers, etc.
However, I noticed this book seemed to be rushed...for example, the author teaches how to make the navigation bar disappear
using the viewWillAppear method but then doesn't tell you how to get it back and where to place code (PAGE 178).
I found out that you must incorporate setNavigatioBarHidden:NO animated:YES to view didLoad method in the second view controller just to get the Navigation Bar back.
It was frustrating to search through the net and then figure it out on your own.

I recommend this book for absolute beginners, who would like to tinker but not for production.
Although the author has written a decent book, I hope that the author realizes that improvements are needed such as:

1) Completing methods when they are introduced.
2) Help the reader understand why they are doing some things introduced.
3) Check the book for logical reasoning in the reader's perspective, such as the aformentioned navigationbar.
4) If a publishing company rushes the author to print an unfinished book, then the author needs to find a new publisher.

Fun Intro to iPhone Programming. - David House - San Francisco, CA
Easy to understand introduction to iPhone programming. Along with coding, Interface Builder is utilized in the examples and exercises to give the reader a better sense of how it can be used in development. Overall I've learned a lot from this book.

No Easy Access to Table of Contents in Kindle for iPhone Version - Web Phillips -
I am giving the Kindle for iPhone version of this book a low review, because it lacks an easy access to the Table of Contents.

You cannot easily navigate to the Table of Contents of this book using the "Go to" feature in the Kindle for iPhone app, because it states that no Table of Contents is available for this book.

However, a Table of Contents for the Kindle for iPhone version of this book does exist, but you have to manually flip through the pages on your iPhone or iPod Touch to find it.

Iphone in Action: Introduction to Web and SDK Development

Great Price Iphone in Action: Introduction to Web and SDK Development for $14.77 Today

I think this book is great. iPhone development is very complex, and the authors of this book make it accessible by giving diving into enough detail to make you productive quickly while gently introducing the more complicated concepts in later chapters.

Like other reviewers, I'm more interested in SDK development than web. However, chapters 10-19 are devoted solely to that purpose, and you miss nothing by starting directly on chapter 10, and always having the web development portion there should you ever need it. This really is two books in one.

The iPhone explodes old ideas of a cell phone. Its native SDK offers a remarkable range of features including easy-to-build graphical objects, a unique navigation system, and a built-in database, all on a location-knowledgeable device. Websites and web apps can now behave like native iPhone apps, with great network integration.

iPhone in Action is an in-depth introduction to both native and web programming for the iPhone. You'll learn how to turn your web pages into compelling iPhone web apps using WebKit, iUI, and Canvas. The authors also take you step by step into more complex Objective-C programming. They help you master the iPhone SDK including its UI and features like accelerometers, GPS, the Address Book, SQLite, and many more. Using Apple's standard tools like Dashcode, Xcode, and Interface Builder, you'll learn how to best use both approaches: iPhone web and SDK programming. This book is intended as an introduction to its topics. Proficiency with C, Cocoa, or Objective-C is helpful but not required.

What's Inside

  • A comprehensive tutorial for iPhone programming
  • Web development, the SDK, and hybrid coding
  • Over 60 web, Dashcode, and SDK examples

Most useless iPhone development book out there. - C. warner - on my laptop
This book is horrible. Many key object descriptions are just one sentence. Every time I turn to this book for a solution I come away disapointed and continue my search somewhere else.

spend you money somewhere else, this book is not worth the cost of printing.

I got this book for the webkit section, but... - Jonathan K. Ho -
I'm the type of person who loves to see full source examples instead of just being fed the concepts. Unfortunately this book gives a snippet here and a snippet there and does not build up an example you can latch onto to say "yes I got that concept down in practice." This book could be so much more....

Poorly Edited - outdated instructions - D. R. Smith - Brooklyn, NY
I recommend this book for anyone who already familiar with the MAC OS developer applications including the interface builder. But this is not for someone who is looking to start learning Cocoa Touch programming. The errata is not published online nor online resources referenced in the book. The author does a good job of explaining certain areas in depth but then breezes over other details for the user to figure out. I highly suspect that the editor did not fully review the material for readability or for content structure.

Also, since the release of Interface Builder 3.2.1 the author's instructions on how to build such things as outlets is wrong (this is a small but serious detail).

Overall I do not recommend this book for anyone but an advanced Cocoa Touch Programmer until the author works with the publisher to give buyers online support.

Dissapointing - Loc Robster - Florida
This is the sixth book I've read on my journey towards developing my own apps. It is definitely not for beginners, as it assumes much prior knowledge and does not "hold your hand" on the details of required coding steps. There is no fault in that, and was expected.

However, having gotten as far as Chapter 5, I am putting this book aside, perhaps never to refer to it again. The text and accompanying graphics are in conflict, and my results do not run. This is EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING. I am trying to learn a difficult (for me) subject, and do not appreciate blatant errors. Wiley Publishing does not provide any Errata on their website for this book, so I am not willing to continue tripping over their inaccurate knowledge.

If I hadn't marked up the book, I would be seeking a refund.

Shame on the author and publisher for rushing this book to market in an obvious attempt to cash in on the growing popularity of Apple's portable computing devices. I admit to seeking the same fortune, but I will hold myself to a higher standard than the dominating "Good Enough" mindset that pervades the manufacturing and publishing industries.

Head First iPhone Development: A Learner's Guide to Creating Objective-C Applications for the iPhone

Head First iPhone Development: A Learner's Guide to Creating Objective-C Applications for the iPhone Review

Bought a few iPhone dev books but being a fan of HeadFirst Design Patterns I decided to give their iPhone book a try - glad I did!
You have to really sit down with Xcode/InterfaceBuilder and go thru the well-thought out examples. When you do, magic happens as page after page gives you the feeling of having an in-house teacher expecting the questions you are going to ask, along with follow-up questions to each of the answered provided.

One criticism I have is it would have good to have a chapter explaining Cocoa and Interface Builder internals; the info is there but scattered all over as the author does prefer waiting to apply theoretical concepts to specific examples. As an example, archiving NIB files and why subclassing a ViewController to reuse a View work the way it does is explained half way thru the book or what a ViewController is exactly and how it handles a View is a critical MVC concept prominent throughout Cocoa programming. A more thorough brain dump on Objective-C would be good instead of letting the reader find out that default class member access level is protected (the chapter does cover ref counting, so why not a more basic OOD concept?)

I really enjoy going thru that book and it definitely is more pragmatic and more hands-on than the other books from APress.
- Highly recommended!

Substantially better than Apress' "Exploring the iPhone SDK" - J. Milam -
For a while now I've been working on getting into developing iPhone applications. I first started with the Apress iPhone "Beginning iPhone 3 Development" and although at the time I felt I had a pretty good understanding of OOP and C programming. However going into the second chapter the book was way over my head. Naturally I stepped back to the Apress "Learn Objective-C on the Mac". The book was helpful although there was very little interaction. It was the teaching style of This does this, here is some example code to demonstrate it. There was little interaction with the reader, walking you through actually building an application.

I picked up this book, and I can't emphasize how great it is. The book engages the reader, is humorous at times, explains theories and concepts multiple times throughout the book to reinforce certain ideas. To anyone looking at starting out with iPhone development, get this book first. You won't regret it.

Useful for concepts but dont try the examples unless you know what you are doing - Lionel Hanners -
this book is really fun to read and it helped me learn some concepts that i was having trouble understanding, however there are so many errors in the code you are supposed to be learning from that the exercises are incomplete-able unless you already know quite a bit about what you are doing. this book has given me the worst headache from trying to figure out where they made a typo.

do not get this book unless you already know the objective syntax like a pro

Programming the Iphone User Experience: Developing and Designing Cocoa Touch Applications

Programming the Iphone User Experience: Developing and Designing Cocoa Touch Applications Review

This book is thin and it is a good point. It is not a book about UI (User Interface), but about User EXPERIENCE. If you want to see good and bad interface designs, there is no better place than the app store itself. Programming the iPhone User Experience is a very clever summary and extension to Apple's HIG. The code examples are the kind of examples I was expecting from an UX point of view: code that you should not forget to include into your app if you want it to be right. I would deeply recommend it.

The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone SDK

The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone SDK Review

Every other iphone book out there sticks to teaching the use of Interface Builder everytime you work on the GUI side of you app. That's totally insane.

I bought this book, made it 4 chapters in and thought I wasted my money. I bought another book and a couple months in realized that all I learned was interface builder and how to make the most basic apps possible. I've gone back to this book and realized it was the only one I needed.

Do not waste your time with making interface builder apps unless you are not a programmer or you are just looking to make a simple app over the weekend and probably never publish it.

This book separates the real programmers from the people who pickup an IDE and think they can code because they can drag and drop GUI components.

I would rather not have any books than not have this book. I would recommend buying it with the Learning Objective c book (from the same publisher) if you are new to the language. I find that it is not as simple to pickup as C++, Java or C# because the syntax is sort of odd. The learning objective c book will help with that.

If you are a good programmer, are new to iphone development, are capable of making really good software and want to create complex apps, this is the only book you will need.

If you are not a programmer (either literally or just think you are a programmer but really are not), are new to iphone and have never written software (on your own without using Google to find all your source code), go get one of the other books that teach drag and drop interface building, you will be lost with this book.

Definitely NOT helpful for new iPhone developers. - software developer -
This book is very frustrating, and an immense disappointment. Despite my 40 years of software development on other platforms, this book is woefully inadequate at helping someone new to iPhone development. Unclear documentation, poorly laid out source code (Ms. Sadun admits that it's done this way for ease of book publishing, not for the user of the book). Downloading the code itself is an exercise in frustration, requiring that you set up other tools (without any documentation) just to be able to download. If you bother to compile the examples, every one has the same name, so you are left with a mess to separate and cleanup, both on your mac and on the iPhone. The author gives you a website if you have any questions, but totally fails to answer a single question or provide any help whatsoever.

Perhaps if you are already a very experienced iPhone developer you can gain some useful kernels of wisdom from this book, but otherwise it's useless. Stay away!
